DCPROMO Fails to demote server

I've upgraded to a 2000 AD from a 4.0 domain recently and
I want to remove the original 4.0 PDC (DC1) which has been
upgraded to 2000 with AD. I have two other DCs (DC2 &
DC3) running for a total of 3. DNS runs on DC2 and all
the FSMO rolls have been moved to DC2. DCDIAGs on all the
DCS come back clean.

When I run DCPROMO on DC1 I go through all the steps then
get a dialog box that says:

"Failed to configure the service NETLOGON as requested
"Not enough storage is available to process this
command. " "

With an OKAY button and then the job finishes. There's
nothing in the Event Viewers and I can't find anything on
support.microsoft.com, Technet or a search through the
web. Anyone have any suggestions before I have to
manually remove all the entries in DNS, use the ADSIEdit
command and metadata removal.

Did you try a dcpromo /forceremoval? See:

Yes I tried that and got the same Error Message. Also
forgot to add that the C: drive has 2.5 GB of free space
and there's an F: Drive with 28GB of free space.

That's certainly enough space. I've seen both errors before, but not at the
same time. Have you tried the following links?:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1
for the server storage issue(this worked for me).

Nothing in the event logs at all?? Surprising...

PagedPoolSize was already at 0.

Just incase someone else stumbles across this error I'll
post what I did to get it to work.

Basically I exported the
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon registry
key from DC2 and imported it into DC1. Rebooted and ran
DCPROMO and it worked fine.

Here is an easier solution that worked for me.

You may experience an error during the demotion of the Source server, namely:

Active Directory Installation Wizard
The operation failed because:
Failed to configure the service NETLOGON as requested
“The wait operation timed out.”

Go ahead and Click "OK". Then click "Back" until you are at the Welcome screen of the "Active Directory Installation Wizard". Then next back through everything and the demotion process should complete correctly.
