I am getting a list of error reports in my event viewer
saying:

"Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server using
DefaultLaunchPermssion. The server is:20002096.....
The user is unavailable/unavailable, SID=unavailable"

The help & support site simply says "The server process
was started but the server is not responding. A
critical .dll or data file might be missing." However it
does not say how to fix the problem.

What does it all mean and is there any way I can fix the
problem?

Many thanks,

Brian

>Hi Brian, There is no reason for the average user to

need DCOM. This servive is how the Blaster worm gets on
your system. I'm geussing here but it might be shut off
if you installed the Blaster "Hotfix" patch from windows
update.I've had DCOM disabled for some time now with no
problems.

Hi Map,

Thank you so much for your reply, and I was just about to
take your advice and disable DCOM but on the help &
support site I found the following:

"Warning If you disable DCOM, may you may lose operating
system functionality. After you disable support for DCOM,
the following may result:
Any COM objects that can be activated remotely may not
function correctly.
The local COM+ snap-in will not be able to connect to
remote servers to enumerate their COM+ catalog.
Certificate auto-enrollment may not function correctly.
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) queries against
remote servers may not function correctly."

This is all rather too technical for me, are you sure
it's still safe to disable the function?

Many thanks,

Brian

There are potentially many built-in components and 3rd
party applications that will be affected if you disable
DCOM. Microsoft does not recommend that you disable DCOM
in your environment until you have tested to discover
what applications are affected. Disabling DCOM may not be
workable in all environments.
