Hi Stephan,
The error message is complaining that you have a missing DNS SRV record, not host record. So the record that is listed in the message, the big BLAH part is what you need to attempt to ping. You can also try runningNetdiag /fix, if this comes back with DNS test pass you are ok, if it comes back with DNS test failed, run it one more time to check. If that works your good to go. If not you need to run a Netdiag /v /L then look at the DNS output in the file and see what it is failing on. Also as stated earlier make sure you DNS settings in IP are only using internal DNS server. Thanks! Alan Wood[MSFT] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. |

Stephan Barr <(E-Mail Removed)> posted their thoughts, then I offered mine > Can you point me in the right direction...? There is a bandaid for this if you look at this article: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300684. However, other things will not work, such as W2k and XP clients not being able to connect to the domain's sysvol containter because the way the GetGPOList runs, it looks for this: \\gsi\sysvol\gsi\policies where a valid domain name would look for: \\gsi.com\sysvol\gsi.com\policies If you look at the way your machines will connect, it treats it as a NetBIOS name instead of the proper domain blank FQDN (which is called the LdapIpAddress) and it fails. Single label names also generate mutliple unnecessary queries to the ISC Root servers because DNS does not know how to properly handle them. This excessive traffic is not something you want on your line, and especially the ISC Root servers trying to process them on the Internet. Suggestion is to rename the domain. If you need more info on that, please post back. -- Regards, Ace Please direct all replies to the newsgroup so all can benefit. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties. I'd like to rename the domain from GSI to GSI.COM

In news:PAQPb.85112$(E-Mail Removed),
Stephan Barr <(E-Mail Removed)> posted their thoughts, then I offered mine > This... > > http://support.microsoft.com/default...roduct=win2000 > Yes, actually it can be a big deal, depending on what mode your domain is in. If in mixed mode you could install an NT4 BDC into the domain, (so it saves your user and computer accounts) and then trash the W2k box, then promote the BDC to a PDC and run the W2k upgrade and it will promote it to a DC. Be sure prior to the upgrade that you set the domain suffix in NT4's TCP/IP properties to the gsi.com or gsi.net name first. Then choose that name when dcpromo runs. If in native mode, then the best solution is to install a new domain with the correct name and use ADMT to migrate your users,groups and computers over. ADMT is a nice tool that will also allow you to preserve the users' profiles when it moves the computer accounts from the old to the new domain. If you need more info, post back. This highly depends on your scenario. Also a suggestion, don't name your domain the same as your external domain name. Not that it's a bad choice, just causes extra administrative work for certain things. Easier to name it .net if your external is already .com. -- Regards, Ace Please direct all replies to the newsgroup so all can benefit. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties. It is mixed; I don't have an NT4 PDC there but I could. So to summarize;
Build NT4 PDC domain name GSI Insert into LAN replicate all accounts to NT4 PDC Upgrade NT4 PDC to w2K with domain name domain.something Good to go...?
