DCC Direct Cable Connection

Hi,

I am trying to connect my HP Pavilion running XP Home to
my Compaq Presario 2100 (laptop) running XP Home as well.
My Desktop as an Ethernet port in which I have connected
a cable directly to the network port of my laptop. But no
matter what I try I cannot get them connected... What am
I to do. Any help is most welcome...
