HELP -

I have my netowrk on a Domain Controller, our software
will not work on a domain controller. I need to demote
it back to a workgroup. I know to start - run -
dcpromo. But after that do I need to reinstall windows
2000 server? Or no? do in need to start from scratch
and reload everything. Like I just bought the system.

The OS is still installed. DCPromo is used to promote the machine to a DC
and installs items such as DNS and the Active Directory. when you demote
the machine using DCPromo again, Active Directory is removed, and certain
entries from DNS are removed as well. This should bring you back to pretty
much the original state of the machine when you first promoted it.

Yes dcpromo will work BUT if it is the only domain controller in the domain it will
mean that you have to go back to workgroup management for all users so keep those
consequences in mind. You will not need to reinstall the operating system. If there
are other domain controllers, make sure at least one is a global catalog server which
you can do in AD Sites and Services. --- Steve

Hello All,

The only problem that I see would be if it was the only DC. If not, the
DCPROMO process should be able to transfer the roles with no problem.
