DC/DVD not working in XP pro

My CD and DVD burners have stopped working when using 'My Computer'.
One of the drives just shows up blank and the other says 'Not accessible,
incorrect funtion'.
Nero works fine with both drives but software that requires a CD in a drive
to work keeps requesting the CD. I have tried all the usual 'fixes', re
installs etc.
When I boot to XP in another partition all works correctly, as does W98.
Something has been 'damaged' but I cannot find what.
Any ideas welcome.
