Hi All,

I've an end of life server which I need to remove from my environment. The
box is one of four DC's in my WIN2K AD, and is one of two DNS servers for my
domain.

Can someone tell me if it possible to demote this DC to a simple member
server and still have it functioning as a DNS server? Any pointers to
related documentation would be most appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Orb.

Sure, but only as a Secondary or THE Primary.

If it will remain a DNS server it almost certainly could
remain a DC.

It would be an odd (i.e., very large) domain where this
was not practical.

And if you use AD Integrated DNS the benefits might
even outweigh the disadvantages (if any.)

Is it AD integrated?

You will need to recreate the zone after the DCPromo
demotion if it is.

If it is an ordinary DNS no change will be technically
required.
