I often find myself needing to work with dBase tables, and am always looking
for good utilities. One good freeware dBase utility is BR7 from Redstone
Softbase. http://www.redstonesoftbase.com/BR7SETUP.EXE

It's a browser with edit, global replace, delete, export, import (append
really). I'm not the author. I'm posting this in the hopes of someone
posting some links back to me.

If anyone has any links to share I'd be very grateful!

There are loads of free *.dbf editor programs on the Net. The one I like
best is dbfNavigator:

www.alxsoft.narod.ru/ENG/dbfnav.htm

ALXSoft also has a *.dbf viewer (dbfRead) and some unique index viewing
programs. Unfortunately, their server is slow. And at the moment the
download links to the files seem to be broken. You can get the latest
version here:

http://www.trustinginthefuture.com/3...ator201eng.zip

I did a binary compare of the executable to the version I loaded from
ALXSoft. It showed no differences.

There was no new version of dbfNavigator for a couple of years (since
2002). On one hand that suggests stability. On the other hand one
can't expect new features. And there are still some wishes left.

Another good *.dbf editor (which also opens other database formats
if one installs the needed drivers: ADO/MDAC, Interbase, BDE) has
been written as a free <OT>Total Commander</OT> plugin. The author
always publishes a stand alone version some time later. It is called
xBaseView:

www.totalcmd.net/plugring/xBaseView.html

There is no stand alone executable for the latest version (v6.07), yet.
You can load v6.06, instead, here:

http://xbaseview.wincmd.ru/StandExe/...eView_606e.zip

I encountered some crashes with this version. So be aware to keep
backup copies of your important files when trying the program out.

If you are willing to work with a DOS program, PC-File 5 itself was
declared freeware. Should be details on the Free Software for DOS Web
site
http://home.att.net/~short.stop/

Be aware that PC-File 5 isn't very relational, but otherwise it's
excellent.

There is a free db module in the new OpenOffice 2, called base. See at
http://www.openoffice.org/product2/base.html

It also supports any LDAP compliant address book, as well as common formats such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Windows, and Mozilla.

Nice collection, but it's really a shame there are no links to the home
pages of the listed apps. I hate to have download and install a program
just to get more details about it or see some screen shots. Yes, I know,
GIYF.

Good point, and you might want to email Jan to ask for screenshots. The
email link is on the home page.

It really is a pain that it's so risky to install a program and so
difficult to uninstall them. Microsoft really needs to make it possible
for program removal to be absolute. IMO this need ranks right up there
with security.
