What do you mean by "no file in the directory with an incorrect extension"?
Do you mean the .ldb extension? That's not an "incorrect" extension, it's a
Locking file created by Access. If you did find one, delete it.
Also, if this is a split database, then check the backend location for a
file ending in .ldb. If you find it, delete it (note: you may have to do
this from the workstation that created the lock)
If you don't find this, and the other items you indicated didn't work, you
may need to contact a data recovery service.
