Date on my desktop

Am I in the right group I ask myself but here goes anyway. Some how after
increasing RAM on my IBM R50e the task bar completely changed and has left
me without a vital statistics which I use frequently namely the date in the
format 10 April 2009 and the day, in view continuously. The time is there
but not the day/date. If I expand the task bar to about one and half inches
in depth I get all the details I require but who needs a task bar that wide?
I am sure someone will be able to help
