You need a formatting switch on the field.
Press ALT+F9 to display the field construction
{Mergefield DateFieldName}
and add the switch between the brackets
{Mergefield DateFieldName \@ "MMMM d, yyyy"}
Press F9 to update and ALT+F9 to toggle the display back.
