Date format becomes blank after first entry

I have a query set up with a date as a field. When I try to enter a date, at
first it is blank. then after several tries it will show the date format but
will not let me enter a date. But if I click on the date above it and then
click on the record I was on before, it allows me to enter the date. any
ideas why this is happening?
