Database in unexpected state

I've gotten an error message about "This database is in an
unexpected state; Microsoft Access can't open it." It goes
on to imply that the database was being convert from an
earlier version incorrectly and that it's only partially
converted. Now this explaination is absolutely bogus, as
far as I can tell, because where the database was running,
there isn't anyone that would try to convert it or compact
it and there aren't newer or older verisons of Access,
just 2000.
I can't get the thing to open; I can't get it to convert
or compact or anything like that; I can't link the tables
to a database that is working; and the Microsoft Jet
Database Compact Utility that I downloaded justs give me
a "Error compacting database" message.
Help me!!! Please. I really just want to get the tables
out. I have a previous version of the database that has
all the same queries, forms and macros. I just need the
data from the tables.
