Data transfer from windows 95 to XP

I tried to attach old hard drive from old computer as
slave to master on new windows XP machine to recover old
data. Unfortunately, this makes new computer boot as
windows 95 & hangs up forever. Any ideas as to best
(cheapest!) way to copy old hard drive info to new
computer? Thanks
