I have taken the disk out of my old PC and have it in an external drive cage
as drive L. Is it possible to transfer data from this drive and if so what?

Yes, of course you can transfer data, and you can transfer whatever you
want. When the drive is connected, it's like any other drive and you can
drag and drop or copy and paste files in either direction.
