data transfer in ad hoc network

Basically I want to set up an adhoc network between a desktop, laptop,
tablet pc and handheld devices (PDAs). I have a few doubts:

1. Is it mandatory for all these devices to be in the same domain ? Or can
the adhoc network work even if they are in different domains ?

2. What is the best way to enable data transfer among these devices ? For
the desktop and laptop, I found that going to the windows explorer and
typing %\\other_computer_name% gives access to the documents in the other
computer (desktop/laptop) provided that document has been shared. Is there a
better way than this ? Also what would be the best way to enable data
transfer with the handheld devices in the network ?

Please note that this network is not supposed to connect to the internet
i.e. it is independent with no infrastructure.

Any help/hints will be appreciated. Thanks,

Navodit

Are you sure we have remote desktop sessions in PDAs and tablet PCs ? Also
if I use Active Sync then would it (ActiveSync) be able to synchronize data
between the devices of an adhoc network ? Or is there something specific
that needs to be done for the adhoc network ? Thanks .
