data Invalid error for network driver

-k- I have a custom built system with XP pro. I have
tried several wireless and LAN based network adapters
cards but when I try and install the drivers I get
a "data invalid" error. I have talked with the companies
and they blame my system for not being up to date and
something to do with MS. My PC is completely up to
date. When I do the win online update and try and get
the driver that way I also get errors about not being
able to load the driver. I am not sure what is going on.
