"data is invalid" when attempting to install any USB devices...

hi folks

Windows XPSP2 fully patched running on a Dell Latitude D610. pretty
much any USB device gives me the "data is invalid" error during plug
and play. i tried altering the permissions of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet\Enum\PCI with no resolution of the
problem. find below a snip from setupAPI.log. any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Try reinstalling the drivers.

i appreciate the response, but of course i tried reinstalling the
drivers. ultimately i performed an install of WinXPsp2 (slipstreamed)
over the top of the current OS. this did the trick, no more problems.
then of course i had to install the 45 or so critical patches since
SP2.
