Data files loaded via association take a long time to load into the application

I have a weird problem on a user PC that I have not been able to correct.

If I Double-Click on any associated file type (INI, LOG, TXT, DOC, PDF, XLS, yada yada) it
takes a good minute plus to load. The same happens if the data file is on a network share
or is on the local PC.

If I load the application (WinWord, Excel, Adobe Reader, yada yada) and then open the data
file it loads quickly. If the file is an email attachment in MS Outlook it loads quickly.

Right-Clicking on a data file to get its properties also takes a while.

This appears is a PC problem not a user problem as any Domain or Local Account on that PC
has the same problem.

Any ideas ?

Hi Dave,

Do you see any network activity when right-clicking on the mentioned file types? If so, you can analyze it further using TDIMon or Ethereal (i've not used it much). My guess is that there is a reference to a dead network drive / UNC Path in the registry.

Ramesh:

Thank you very much.

The URL you provided me and your "guess" were on the money.

I searched HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ for "\\" and did indeed find dead UNC locations and I
replaced them with live ones. This corrected the delay and the user was extremely happy
with the results.
