In 2003 when there was a problem, 2003 would check the problem on the spot
and not open till it did. 2007 seems to do that in the background, but is it
doing it? Mine's been running for 3 days and seems to not do anything......
Anyone know if this can be checked or forced?

You can run scanpst.exe against it as well.

Tried that, but get an error message - "The procedure entry point
DDLUninitInstance@0 coluld not be located in the dynamic link library
MSMAPI32.dll" so I resume it doesn't work with 2007?

I guess you found your reason why it doesn't complete the check in the
background. It sure should work with Outlook 2007.
Were any previous versions of Outlook installed on this system before?
Have you tried a repair/reinstall of Office already?

Yes, previously had 2003 installed, but have uninstalled it and also done a
repair/reinstall of office. So that's great then....

What version is reported by MSMAPI32.dll?
At what point do you get the error? When launching scanpst.exe or during the
checking procedure?

Sorry - what do you mean what version is reported? When I double click
scanpst.exe, I get the message below

The error message I get when I double click scanpst.

I have downloaded scanpst seperately onto my desktop and run it and get this
error: "This application has failed to start because SCNPST32.dll was not
found. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem" So that obviously
doesn't work!

Why did you download it and/or moved it? Use it directly from;
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

well there you go, I must be using the 2003 one, which must still be there
for some reason... Just gone to the below (this location is not listed
anywhere on the web I can find btw!) and it opens ok, but just sits at the
initializing stage Phase 0 from 8 and doesn't do anything.....

This could be due to the level of corruption. Does it work for other
pst-files? You might want to start off with a new pst-file. Then move the
content from the old pst-file to the new.
