When I try to open Internet Explorer, I get a message that says Windows has
closed this program, Internet Explorer. I can change settings but that
doesn't seem to help.

I am using XP Home edition with SP3 and trying to connect via U-verse. I
have no problem connecting using Netscape or Firefox.

Any suggestions as to how I can connect with IE would be appreciated.

Add Internet Explorer to DEP's excluded list:

1. Right-click the desktop's 'My Computer' icon and select 'Properties'.

2. Open the 'Advanced' tab, then click the 'Settings' button under 'Performance'.

3. Open the 'Data Execution Prevention' tab.

4. Activate the option, 'Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:'.

5. Click the 'Add...' button and browse to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer" and add "iexplore.exe".

6. Apply, OK, OK.

Windows feels that IE is a threat to your system and is preventing it
from running.

If IE used to work, there is no need to add it to the DEP exclusion
list - it was not there before and should not have to be there -
ever. If you just add it, you are telling Windows that it is okay to
run the threatening program. Is that what you want?

You would be better served to figure out why Windows thinks IE is a
threat and fix it. It is abnormal.

Reduce the chances of malicious software by running some scans.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

These can be uninstalled later if desired.

Make sure you are up to date on your Windows updates - new Windows
threat definitions came out last week.

If you still have trouble, provide our system information:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select
All, Copy and then paste
back here.

There would be some personal information (like System Name and User
Name) or whatever appears to
be only your business that you can delete from the paste.
