I have a classmate in one of my courses who is having trouble with one of her
computers at work. When any Excel document is opened, any attempt to enter
data causes several cells to highlight, but she cannot enter any data. I
believe they are using Excel 2003, could it be some kind of macro problem?

Try tapping the wheel on the scroll mouse. If this fails, try re-loading
the mouse drivers
