Data Access Layer and Business Entity Layer

I’m having a design dilemma

In an n-tier data application, I plan on using a presentation layer, business entity layer, data access layer and a database factory layer.

If I want to apply strict rules to the business entity class where certain fields are read only, how does the DAL class fill it? I’d also rather not have the presentation layer call the data access layer.
