Hi,
Consider the following scenario. I'm running XP. There are two NICs in
the machine. The NIC for my internal network has an IP address of
192.168.1.2. The other NIC picks up it's address via DHCP via a cable modem.
This machine is configured for Internet Connection Sharing so everything on
my internal network (i.e. XBox, other computers) uses this XP box as their
default gateway.
There's also a Cisco router on my internal network. This router has an
IP address of 192.168.1.1. That router is connected via T1 (local loop) to
another network at my colocation cabinet. All of the machines in that remote
cabinet have an IP range of 192.168.0/24.
Now back to that XP machine. I've modified the routing table of the XP
machine (i.e. "route add"...) so that all traffic destined for 192.168.0/24
is handed off to the Cisco router. So basically all machines on my internal
network can talk to machines on the Internet or to machines in the remote
facility. This all works fine. Now with that as background...
This XP machine is also my main workstation. I've created a VPN
connection on there which I use periodically to tunnel into the network of
one of my customers. This VPN connection should only activate itself when I
double-click on it. Instead, it seems to activate itself at random times and
I have no idea why. I might be using Internet Explorer to visit a website on
the Internet, or perhaps I'm passing traffic to one of the machines in the
remote facility, or sometimes I'm doing nothing at all... and the darned VPN
connection just activates itself. In each case it presents me with a popup
asking if I want to connect using this VPN connection. I always say no and I
even checked the box that tells it to never ask me again... but yet the
darned popup keeps coming back all the time. I've resorted to deleting the
VPN connection entirely and recreating it each time I want to use it... but
that's a major hassle. Any workarounds for this apparent bug?
Thanks...
