My problem is still more-or-less unresolved. Can anyone help? Here is the
question/response trail. Thanks.

Email trail:
When I log on it displays fine but within about 30 seconds it goes dark.
Unless you have another idea...is something like the inverter very expensive
to replace? Thanks for your time.

Is your screen ok after you have loggged on or is it permanently dark?. If
it is permanently dark I would suspect the inverter for the LCD screen has
failed and needs replacing.

I am operating XP on a laptop, COMPAQ Evo N610C. When I log on...during the
boot process the screen goes dark. If I look real hard I can see my desktop
in the backgroud but not to the point where I can use. I have looked for a
button to adjust the screen lighting but can't find one. Anyone with an
idea? Thanks.

Read the above thread for clues as to which keys will brighten the
screen . Then check the Power Options in Control Panel to see what they
are set to in regards to running from the battery/ running from AC/ etc.
