Damaged .bkf file

I made a back up of my "C" drive using the back up utility in XP Pro. Now
when I try to access the .bkf file it gives an error saying something like
"unrecognizable data, the file can not be used". Since this I had a crash
and need to restore just my .pst file for outlook. Is there a way to access
this file (.bkf) with a third party app or something so I can extract the
one file I need to restore???
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
