Hello group
My PC is run by WINXP SP2.
I was interested what daemon tools was all about and I downloaded a
version of it in Rar and extracted it. What happen was the extracted
folder was Empty and supposed contents was not even extracted.

Daemon Tools V 4.10x86 32 bit with SPTD 1.50. and the extracted folder
was empty. When I tried to open the folder Daemon folder is not
accessible or access denied. Therefore I tried to delete it but it
won't move!
Even when I cut an paste it to another removable drive which I can
reformat it won't budge. This worries me and would like to ask if
there is anyway to remove this stubborn folder from my files.
TIA
Roy

Don't see why you are blaming Daemon tools.

You extracted a rar file.

I don't know if it's possible to have a rar file set user permissions on a
file.

Something else is going on. Have you tried taking control of the directory
using the security tab. You need to be logged in using an admin account to
do this.

Maybe the rar extractor you used hasn't shut down properly and the file is
marked as "in use". It certainly sounds liks some process has locked the
file, similar to the XP avi bug.

Daemon Tools is fine if you know how to use them. It sounds like your
download was corrupt. How did you download? If you used a peer to peer
program then possibly the program is still uploading it. Boot to SafeMode
and delete it from there. If that doesn't work then get rid of it by running
this freebie
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/moveonboot.html or a similar program that
deletes files during startup and prior to Windows loading.

You quite possibly downloaded a piece of malware, and not Daemon Tools.
Daemon Tools homepage is http://www.daemon-tools.cc/
And the download is a *.exe file, not a RAR archive.
Check your system for viruses and spyware before proceeding.

Thanks for the replies I had checked my files for malware and so far
nothing was detected....

BTW
I have installed the selected software Move on Boot
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/moveonboot.html
but still was unable to remove the supposed to be blank folder as it
kept saying access denied.
Did I miss something or was using the safe mode inefficiently.
I tried renaming it and it said Access denied
I tried with a software called UNLOCKER
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
Which are supposed to remove stubborn files but this time the
unlocker can't find a handle that it can use to unlock the file so
that it can be removed. Still it states access denied. Therefore I
renamed the file and was possible with Unlocker, unfortunately the
file was still stubborn to remove.
I Scan it with antivirus and antispyware but it did not recognize any
malicious file from my system except for the tracking cookie( which
are considered low risk).
Now I am still trying to sort out the problem.....
I would like to ask supposing you are in my situation what steps would
you do to remove a stubborn file and how would you do it in the
stepwise manner. I am not sure if I did the thing in the safe mode as
I did not see that file during boot up nor I was able to open the D
drive where that stubborn file is located..It said:

Cannot delete the file,,,,,,Access Denied. Make sure the disk is not
full or write protected and that the file is not currently in
use......

BTW I am not well used to troubleshooting things by Safe Mode, could
somebody guide me through it in stepwise manner? The file that I am
going to remove is in the D drive.
TIA
Roy

To further eliminate the possibility of malware you may want to find out
what might have a handle on it. Use Process Explorer or OH.exe and see
if you can get the handle information. Both of these utilities are
available on the Microsoft.com site, just search for them there.

If you can't find more information and if you cannot delete the files by
regular methods you can use Assarbads RunAsSys utility:
http://assarbad.net/de/stuff/temp/ On his english page look for
localsystem.zip The utility will allow you to open a Command Prompt
(cmd.exe) with Local System account privileges, from there you can use
the del or RD commands to delete files or folders. Be careful with that
utility, you will have great destructive powers while running under the
system account credentials!
