I should have mentioned what I'd pulled down & tried on Intel as part
of my initial post. I'd tried a few of the files you'd mentioned but
should have followed through more carefully - your directions (and my
creating a checklist of everything via the D/L or unpack process)
solved the problem.
In the case of the "Ethernet Controller", the correct program/driver
(for the sake of posterity) was pro2kxp.exe, specify an unpack
directory, then run setup.exe. That took care of the actual
installation directly; i.e., it wasn't required you go to the Device
Manager/Hardware, pick a piece of hardware, navigate to the device,
"update driver", etc. etc. etc. was not necessary. setup.exe did it
all.
