This is probably a very basic piece of knowledge, but I'm stumped. What for,
why and how do I used the D: drive. Thanks!

<<What for, why and how do I used the D: drive.>>
The simple (but not so useful) answer is that it depends on what it is.

It could be another hard disk (or the one hard disk may be partitioned into
two parts). Have a look at Windows Explorer. if the icon next to the D: is
a hard disk (the same as the C it is a hard disk and may be to store
files.

It could be a network drive (a drive contained in another computer accessed
over a network).

It could be a CD drive (for reading program and music CDs and possibly a CDR
for writing same. Again have a look at Windows Explorer.
Likewise it could be a DVD drive.

They're the most likely answers.

Hope this helps.

You are perhaps assuming that everyone has the same kind of D: drive you
do.But that's not at all the case. On my computer the D: drive is a reader
for a media card used by cameras. It could be a second hard drive. On many
computers the D: drive is a CD or DVD drive. It could be a network drive (a
pointer to a drive on another computer in the network).

But I'll make the guess that in your case you have a single hard drive
that's been divided into two partitions C: and D: If that's so, they will
apear to you as two separate hard drives. You can use the second drive for
almost all the things you use the first (C for--you can install programs
there, put data files there, etc. If you put everything on C:, sooner or
later you will probably ruin out of space there, and *have* to move some
things to D:

And another option is it's a virtual drive used by another program that disallows you to do anything with it such as a HP All-in-one printer scanner that sets up a virtual drive for it's purposes.
