Help,

The Icon for my CD-RW/DVD combo drive has disappeared from
the drives listed under "My Computer." I have an IBM
Thinkpad with a Hataci combo drive. The hardware appears
to be working fine, but is no longer recognized by the
oppSys. We have tried unpluging & reinserting the drive,
and uninstalling the drivers/& re-installing. The Device
Manager shows that the drivers are corrupted, or that
there is a problem. IBM tried installing the BIOS update
and that didn't help. We also installed all the Windows
updates, but that didn't help. We do not want to f-disk
and reinstall the oppSys. Is there some way we can get a
new CD-RW/DVD driver, so we can replace the corrupted
driver. Or would this require a registry fix?

We tried searching the Knowledge Base and the MS help
sites, but did not find the needed download. We would
appreciate any help. Where can we find Win2000 hardware
drivers?

Hatachi combo drive FRU P/N 08K9820
ASM P/N 92P6377
Type IBMO

IMB Thinkpad A31 # 2652-P4U

Sincerely,
Alex Brown

Just a thought to try first:

1) If you have TweakUI installed on your Control Panel,
open the My Computer tab and see if your drive is
currently checkmarked.

2) Then take a look at the disk Manager by typing
diskmngt.msc in the Start>Run box. See if you have a
conflict there or try to reorganize the dirve
letters/types and reboot.

3) I've had this happen to me before and if the icon
displays itself in Windows Explorer, but not in My
Computer, you should try seeing if you have a resource
conflict in your Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device
Manager.

4) Last. If you did a firmware update on your drive, you
may have damaged the controller. Some manufacturers offer
firmware updates listed on their web sites alongside with
the software bundle/driver updates without adequate
warnings. Have the manufacturer send you a replacement if
you did that.

Good luck!
