I have a address list that some one divided in columns using the tab function
instead of creating columns. When I try and cut and past it wants to cut out
from both columns. Is there a way without destroying the document to cut out
just one column?

Hold Alt while you drag a rectangle around the column(s) you want to
select.

Or, convert to a Table using Text to Table, and proceed with the
familiar Table operations.
