How can I customize a macr button to have alpha characters rather than
symbols as we could in previous versions of Word?

I take it you have Word 2007. Button faces for macros on the Quick Access
Toolbar cannot be customized to anything other than the ones in the Modify
popup in the Customize dialog.

If the general lack of customzation in Office 2007 bothers you as much as it
does me, complain -- loudly and often. A good spot might be the Word Team's
blog,
