For some of my folders, I have customized them by doing the following:

Right-click on a folder
Properties
Customize tab
Change icon...

My question is what is the purpose of changing the default for "What kind of
folder do you want?" The default is "Documents (for any file type)"

I don't see any difference among Documents, Pictures, Photo Albums, Music,
or Videos.

I'm using Windows XP

For one thing..

If you have Video folder, in the Common Task pane you should have Play All.

If you have Pictures folder, in the Common Task pane you should have View as
a slide show.

Common Task pane is the left hand pane that you see instead of the Folders
pane, which shows a Tree View.

Common Tasks pane...
[[You can display hyperlinks to common tasks in the left pane of your folder
windows. The links provide quick access to file and folder management
activities and other places on your computer, such as My Computer, Shared
Documents, and My Network Places. Windows displays these links by default,
so they may already be displayed in your folders. If they are not, you can
use Folder Options to enable this feature.]]

tree view
[[A hierarchical representation of the folders, files, disk drives, and
other resources connected to a computer or network. For example, Windows
Explorer uses a tree view to display the resources that are attached to a
computer or a network.]]

If you really do not see a difference, then you do not have Common Tasks set
to show or you have another problem.

Open Folder Options...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
General tab | Select: Show common tasks in folders |
Click Apply | Click OK
