Custom page size 5.5"x7.75" doesn't take effect

Office XP - MS Word

I've changed the page size to 5.5 x 7.75 inches... When I print, it appears
to ignore the page size, and prints as if it were 8 1/2 x 11. I'm also
getting the message that the margins are set outside the printable area which
it's not....

What am I doing wrong?????
The printer is an HP 6P laser jet & I'm using the manual tray feed
