I've just switched computers from a Windows 2000 machine to a Vista Business
machine. In addition, I went from MSN Messenger 7.0 to Windows Live Messenger
8.1. I've found the custom emoticon folder on my Windows 2000 machine but not
sure were to put the contents on the Vista machine.

Greetings,

Unfortunately only Windows Live Messenger 8.1 (which doesn't run on Win2k) is the first
version of Messenger to fully support being able to copy your emoticons since version 6 as
they are locked to a specific PC.

Instead, assuming you still have access to the PC in question, you can use this tool to
transfer them for you:

Thanks vyer much. I was able to export my custom emoticons off of my old
laptop but where do I put them on my new laptop? I tried dropping them into
the root of the MS Messenger folder but they still do not show.

Jonathan:
I found this posting after I wrote the other post. I believe this is the
answer to my question about how to move the Enoticons from my old XP to my
new XP. I am not sure I have the same version of Windows Live Messenger on
both computers. Is it important that I have the same verson as the old
computer does not have internet now but I think I could get it back on if I
needed to.

Thanks

Hi,

Since it's XP, you probably have at least 8.1 (8.5 is fine too) on both machines anyway, so
you can just copy them over.

You'll find the files here on XP:
\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Messenger\LiveID\ObjectStore

Where username is your Windows username and LiveID is your Windows Live ID e-mail address.
Just copy the whole folder from one machine to another in the same location (although the
Windows username can be different).

Additionally, some of these folders will be hidden by default. To see them in Windows
Explorer, click Tools, then Folder Options, then the View tab, and then choose 'Show hidden
files and folders'. After click OK, they should appear with the other folders.
