I find custom attributes on controls a great way to cache control-related
data because it gets persisted through postback in ViewState. The only
problem though is that custom attributes cause your markup to fail W3C
validation.

It isn't possible to add data to a control's individual ViewState property
(which would be a useful enhancement). Can anyone suggest another way round
this?
