When I write on a word or outlook document my cursor jumps to a random part
of the document for no rhyme or reason. Is this a software problem with the
latest updates or a hardware problem?

How else can I find a help to this problem as my work revolves around word

Sounds like a hardware problem.

this seems like a Windows problem, not a word or outlook problem

this news group is for none of the above.

I had this happen to me once...it drove me CRAZY...for weeks, intermittantly my cursor would take on a mind of it's own. I thought it was a virus, or spyware...I went nuts cleaning scrubbing...nuthin!

Turned out it was a drawing pad with wireless pen buried under a stack of papers and CDs...everytime I'd nudge the stack of papers the pen would move which takes over the cursor function...DUHDOH !! :-)

It sounds like you may be using Windows XP and a recent edition of
Office/Word? And did you recently upgrade to SP2?

I forget where to turn this off but it may be XPs speech recognition
function -- search Help to find out how to turn this off. Try that,
anyway...

Also look under Mouse settings and make sure it isn't set to follow the
"focus"...

Could also be just a dirty mouse or a weak battery in the case of wireless.
Try cleaning the ball and rollers, worked 4 me.
