When I am typing and get to the end of a sentence and want to begin a new
paragraph, as usual, I press "enter." However, instead of going to the next
line, the cursor jumps several spaces, perhaps as many as 4 to 6, down, and
sometimes jumps to the bottom of the page. Any help?

Possibly your setting for spacing after a paragraph?

Check whether in Page Setup > Layout, your Vertical Alignment is set
to something other than Top.

(Double-click the ruler; or, Word2003, it's under the File menu.)
