cursor location in word document is blinking period not slash

I'm using Microsoft Word 2003 -- When I'm typing in a Word document, the
cursor location is indicated by a flashing dot. How do it get it to show a
vertical line or large I?

Change the zoom to 500% then back to your preferred setting.
