Since updating to Office 2007, when typing an email in Outlook 2007 my cursor
keeps moving to different parts of the email page. For example: if you type a
message and look at the cursor position, it has moved to a different part of
the page, then you have to re-position the cursor and delete the incorrect
entries. This some times happens after just typing several words but there is
no consistency.

I thought that it may be a virus, even though I have upto date virus
software and firewall. A couple of days ago I reformatted my hard drive and
after installing the software again the same problem is happened again.

Has anyone had similar problems, or is this some sort of virus as it may not
have anything to do with Office 2007 and how do you stop it?

My cursor has a mind of its own when I am using the wordprocessor programme
in my (new) computer that had works 8.5 installed. It means that I dare not
take my eyes off the screen for fear that the typing has inserted itself
somewhere in the text just written.

IS THIS A VIRUS... HOW DO I RECTIFY IT?????????????????

As I originally posted this problem, I did exactly the same as you by
reformatting etc. but it always returned.

A few weeks ago I did a factory low level format using Microscope by
Micro2000, this is a lot lower than the higher level formats you use with the
operating system; as it resets the hard drive to a factory format. After that
and reinstalling Office 2007 again I have not had anymore problems.

I hope that you find this useful. Higher level formats are only similar to a
delete function; perhaps a bit lower but it is possible for viruses to
rewrite themselves from the CMOS area.

Forgive me for sounding like the technophobe I am but... Does this mean that
it IS a virus and (if so) shouldn't MS have done something about it by now
instead of selling us an expensive alternative?

I am happy to buy this factory low level format if this is what it takes (as
a copy touch-typist it is a pain to always refer back to the screen) to be
able to 'trust' the WP programme. How / Where do I buy it??

Or perhaps I should convert to Mac with which I have never had any trouble.

I have two PCs with Office 2007 them, it was only my laptop that had the
problem; so it is not a fault with Microsoft. It is differcult to confirm
whether this is a virus but it is suspecious that that we have both had
identical problems.

You can buy Microcsope from www.micro200.co.uk, but unless you are also into
PC repairs this is a lot of money to spend. It would be cheaper to purchase a
new hard drive as they are so cheap, it your PC does not have a very large
hard drive it will give you the opportunity to increase the storage at the
same time.

At least that way you are starting from a fresh system.

Also use Spybot after the installation as I have found that this is really
good.

While there have been viruses known to cause the effect you describe, any
current antivirus program is capable of detecting all known viruses that
exhibit this behaviour.

This is just to let you know that I have solved this problem. I noticed that
I was getting a Windows pop message stating that I was low on API Memory
Resourses. Then I noticed that I was getting the cursor jumping to different
parts of the screen; but after rebooting it was OK again. I checked my CMOS
and found that the Base Memory was showing only 32k instead of 638k. This can
also be 640k.

After resetting this back to 638k using Microscope Diagnostic Software my
computer has been working perfectly well again.

I do suspect that the original cause was a virus as there are viruses that
can reside in this memory area and not always Virus Removers will always find
this, as I had to do a low level format. Some Set-up BIOS when you press F2
during the bootup allow you to adjust this, but unfortunately you normally
have to use a diagnostics software.
