Cursor hangs

This problem has occurred infrequently but most recently
is happening regularly. I'm running Windows XP Pro on a
Dell laptop Inspiron 4150. Whether simply moving around
the desktop and booting or in a program (explorer, for
example) the cursor freezes or hangs. To unfreeze it I
typically need to click multiple times on the CTRL key,
which is programmed to highlight the location of the
cursor. I am using the touchpad on the machine, by the
way. I have the same machine and configuration on my
company laptop and have not experienced this problem.
Any suggestions for eradicating this troublesome problem?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
