I'm now running my on a new drive 4 times the size of the original. I'm
getting no more block errors and I'm getting no more long delays after
shut-down! Thanks to everyone who contributed to the thus far successful
outcome. I have some further ideas to check out from related suggestions
too.

God doesn't do computer fixes. In fact He can't stand the sight of them.

They are, after all the invention of Satan. ;-)

Glad you got it fixed anyway.

Guess that would explain the big 6 6 6 that briefly flashes on my screen
when it boots. 8-)
