Cumulative Security Update for IE7 for Windows XP (KB947864)

I'm a noob at this so beware. I recently had to re-install XP pro (actually
it was a re-upgrade to maintain all existing data/software). Then I decided
to install SP3 instea of returning to SP2. Both went well and without
problems that I am aware of. Since, Auto-Update has downloaded the update
named in the subject line. Problem is that when I select the download for
installation I get a message, "Some updates could not be installed" within a
few seconds. The body of the window indicates "Cumulative Security Update
for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB947864)" as the uninstalled item.
Nothing I have tried makes the installation work or allows me to get rid of
it. Any help is appreciated.

No use suggesting something to try since it might be something you tried and
doesn't work... Maybe it would be a good idea to list what you have tried?

Yes, I see your point. Well, I went to the Microsoft Update site and looked
for the download.
I was thinking that perhaps I could force the download again and it might
act differently. I
did find a page discussing the update but not one providing a link to the
download. I did, however,
find an indication of another download that was listed in my history as
having failed.
Security Update for Windows XP (KB927802). I don't know if th two are
related.

I also went into Add and Remove Programs to see if anything seemed out of
place. I removed
an update to the Office 2007 Compatibilty program and the program itself
(since I don't use it)
but that had no effect on the pending installation.

I have tried running the installation both as express and custom. Both fail.

I made sure the IE7 was the default browser (and that I was usuing IE7) just
in case there was
some issue with having Firefox installed.

Lastly, I tried to kill the process that was running the installation.
Namely a file called wuauclt.exe.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

Thank you! That was indeed the correct fix. The update in question has been
applied successfully. Thank you PA Bear and all in the community. This is an
excellent resource for folks like me.
