Since instaloing XP Service Pack 2, I have been encountering the behaviour in
KB article 328915. The cpu hits a constant 100%, seemingly all being
consumed by csrss.exe. The only solution is to turn the computer off by
holding the power button down.
The exact scenario where this occurs is with Fast User Switching, with two
accounts logged in - one active, and one unused in the background . when the
battery warnings begin (around 10% battery life left) the cpu hits 100% and
the system becomes almost completely unresponsive. Plugging the computer back
in to the mains power at this point doesn't help, the cpu stays at 100%. Even
if I manage to log off the 'active' account - which can take ten minutes plus
while the computer in this state, the CPU stays maxed out.
In the past, when I first had this computer, I had this isse with the ATI
Hot Key Poller service, but I disabled that and the problem went away.I have
even tryed using the Omega video drivers instead of the ATI ones in case it
was a video driver bug, but the behaviour is the same.
