Crossed Swords - A lot of them!

I am getting very large numbers of crossed swrods
appointments on my Outlook Calendar. I work in an offline
mode and then synch to a remote exchange server. A very
significant % of my appointments (particularly past
appointments) seem to be ending up with the crossed swords.

Any ideas?

The "crossed swords" indicate a conflict such as
the appointment was open twice at the same time.
When the first instance closes with a change everything
is ok. But then when the second instance closes there
is a conflict in information. I have never seen this
happen with calendar items, unless there was a
delegate involved.
