Cross reference

Hi,

Using cross reference to point to other part of a document. For instance "..
more information can be found in chapter 1.2.3". where 1.2.3 is a reference.
However, if I add another chapter that mean chapter 1.2.3 becomes chapter
1.2.4 then the cross reference text is not updated to 1.2.4 - it still says
".. more informatio can be found in chapter 1.2.3". Why does happen? I tried
to to save document and update table of content but neither of those actions
help. What did help was to set Options->Print Update fields and update links
to true. If I then open and close Print preview the text is updated. This
however not a very easy approach to remember to perform. I would have
expected this kind of update to occcur when saving the document but no such
luck. Any ideas?

Cross-reference fields do not update automatically, ie when you create a new
subsection which changes the original section's number.
There are several methods to update these and other fields.
One is to jump to other Views, Normal-Print Preview-Normal for example.
Or Ctrl+A (to select the whole document), F9 to update all fields(and links)
in the document.
Word also has an option which will update these for you upon certain action:
Tools, Options, Print, check Update Fields and Update Links.

You can also have a macro (assigned to an icon) which will update the
document completely for you.

Hope this helps

the easiest approach (for me) is to use CTRL-A (SelectAll) and the press
F9 (UpdatedFields). This updates all fields in the current document.

Well, it updates all fields in the current StoryRange (i.e., the main
text story or the headers and footers, wherever you cursor is at the
moment), but that usually suffices ...
