You don't need to set the IP addresses manually. If you don't, win98
and winxp will automatically assign themselves compatible "Automatic
Private IP" addresses in the 169.254.x.x range.

That will happen after a wait of approximately one minute at boot
time, while they look for a (non-existent) DHCP server to assign an IP
address. If you don't want that delay, here are two ways to avoid it:

1. Assign static IP addresses. Common choices are 192.168.0.1 and
192.168.0.2, with subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

2. Configure winxp as an Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) host. It
will share its Internet connection with win98 and will assign
192.168.0.x IP addresses to both computers.

Connect the RJ45 cables. Next run the network wizrd. To network
the computers, run Network Setup Wizard. To start the Network Setup Wizard,
click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
Under Common Tasks, click Network Setup Wizard.

Run the Wizard (netsetup.exe) in the 98 computer also. It will automatically
create
file, internet sharing etc. To access the files from one computer to
another, use the \\IP Address at the run command.

To access ComputerA, click start | run | "\\computerA" or \\IPAddress

network wizard will automatically assign ip address

I'd use "\\computer-name" at the Run command instead of using the IP
address -- most people have an easier time remembering computer names
than IP addresses.

Even easier, open "My Network Places", where the shared disks and
folders on each computer will appear.
