I remember a month or so ago there was a (destructive)
virus circulating that only dealt with WinXP. I believe it
was related to either 'SoBig' or 'MBlast' - but think it
was MBlaster. I also believe there was a Critical Update
to download which would protect against that virus. Once
again, I believe the Critical Update was KB823980. Is that
correct. My previuos notebook with WinXP had the KB823980
already downloaded. HOWEVER, I just receive another
notebook and looking in the 'Add/Remove Programs' I DO NOT
see KB823980! I went to the MS Critical Download page and
saw a few Critical Downloads, but none for KB823980. Would
anyone know why I am not see KB823980 as a Critical Update
to be downloaded. I want to make sure this new notebook is
protected against that Virus (MBlaster ?) that was
circulating a month or so ago. Please advise soonest, and
thank you.

Look for 824146, it superseded 823980
FAQ #1 on this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...n/MS03-039.asp

However you should protect against all vulnerabilities and not limit
fixes to just Blaster.
Install ALL Critical Updates:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/Update.htm

Also see:

I do not see 824146 in my "Add/Remove Programs," nor do I
see it in the current Critical Updates for download (for
my WinXP). I just see the Critical Update download KB
824145. (I always download ALL the Critical Updates.)

I did a Search on Drive "C" for "824146" and get two
locations: One is: C:\winnt and Two is: C:\winnt\system32
\catroot. Could this be what you are referring to? I am a
bit new at this and as a senior citizen quite nervous
about problems being caused by downloaded from other sites
(other than MS). Hope you understand. I do notice the
version of my WinXP is Build Version 5.1. I just remember
so much being published about the SoBig and Blaster
worms/virus that I just want to make sure this new
notebook with WinXP is protected. Thank you for your help.

Bobby;
That sounds right except there is not uninstall file.
There can be a few reasons for this and most are not bad.

follow this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=824146#WinXP
Go to the Windows XP section.
From there you can verify if the 6 files installed on your computer
are the correct versions and dates.

Thanks. Do you know... How would we tell if we have 64-bit
WinXP? If we downloaded the KB824146-Scan would it be hard
to execute? Would it do any harm to our computer or to
WinXP? What would it tell us if we had or did not have
KB824146 and KB823980?? If you do not know answers, no
need to reply.

Bob;
You have 32 bit Windows XP and a 32 bit computer.

If you manually download and install an update you have already
installed, normally no problem.

Owning a 64bit OS and computer is not something you have any doubts
about. Kinda like owning a ferrari. After the money you've spend, You
KNOW you own one

Thanks for the answer.
You gave me "http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
kbid=824146#WinXP" - but they all seem to be for WinXP 64-
bit? Is that correct? That's why I asked what my WinXP
was, and you said 32-bit.
I also notice on that page:
"To verify that the security patch is installed on your
computer, use the KB 824146 scanning tool
(KB824146scan.exe) or use the Microsoft Baseline Security
Analyzer (MBSA) tool. For additional information about
KB824146scan.exe, click the following article number to
view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:..."

That is what I was talking about when I said - would it be
hard to execute? Would it do any harm to our computer or
to WinXP? What would it tell us if we had or did not have
KB824146 and KB823980??

If you don't know, no need to answer. I think this is
getting a bit too difficult for us neophytes. If you have
anser, would you e-mail, Subject: WinXP KB824146? Thanks
again.
