when booting windows xp, i get the windows "critical stop" sound. .. . what
problems does that sound associate with?
and how can i find the file or progaram that is loading that causes the
sound? i have checked all programs in "sounds and audio devices" in the
control panel and nothing is associated with that sound. . thanks in advance
for any help

Ronald,

START | CONTROL PANEL | SOUNDS...

You may have Critical Stop with the Windows Startup instead. Select anything
(NONE for example) & click APPLY | OK

These files are located in the '[Drive letter here]\Windows\Media' folder

[Drive letter here] = drive in which Windows is installed. Example: C:\

The programmer decides when and under what conditions to invoke the
"critical stop" sound.

Programs aren't associated with sounds. Any one program can invoke multiple
sounds depending on the whim of the programmer.

Hi Ronald,

Try searching the registry for the file name of the sound bit, in your
case, Windows XP Critical Stop.wav.

You could also try using MSCONFIG to disable all startup items and then
add them back in one at a time until the sound happens again.
