Thank you - I unchecked some things that loaded on startup and one of them
was the culprit. Haven't had the problem since. I did an internet search on
every entry I wasn't sure about and when they didn't sound like I needed
them I got rid of them. So, unfortunately, I can't be sure which one was
actually the problem. I guess I should have tried one at a time but I didn't
feel like rebooting multiple times.
I don't use Outlook Express for my mail, only for newsgroups. I use Outlook
2007 for my mail, and it is set to check every 5 minutes, so I did think of
that possibly being the problem. But, the critical stop sound would play
without having any programs open. I'm just glad it's gone - hearing that
every 5 minutes was driving me crazy!!!
